The Music Writer’s Lab was first introduced at the BIGSOUND music conference and festival in 2022.

Six emerging writers were flown to Brisbane, Australia, to participate in a closed-door workshop day with three mentors, before being tasked with creating content for a series of Australian music media outlets that would go on to be published in the weeks following BIGSOUND.

As part of the BIGSOUND conference program, project facilitator Sosefina Fuamoli hosted a discussion panel focused on the state of Australian music journalism, featuring mentors Marcus Teague and Rhianna Patrick, as well as Australian music journalist (now Head of Content, The Brag) Lars Brandle.
